EduElfie is proud to have created Track Stars!, a fully custom Minecraft: Education Edition experience developed for Queensland Rail to help primary school students across Queensland learn safe behaviours around rail level crossings.
The Challenge
Level crossings represent the highest public safety risk on the rail network, with a significant proportion of collisions resulting in injuries or fatalities. Queensland Rail's Community Education team was already delivering hundreds of in-person school presentations annually, but reaching every school — particularly those in regional and remote Queensland — remained a challenge. A scalable, engaging digital solution was needed.
The Solution
Track Stars! is a purpose-built, custom Minecraft: Education Edition world set in a detailed urban environment, designed from the ground up to immerse students in authentic level crossing scenarios. Rather than simply presenting safety rules, the game scaffolds student learning through structured, progressive missions that guide students from observation to understanding to active decision-making.
Key Features
Custom Urban World
The game world is a fully custom-built urban environment, purpose-designed to reflect the kinds of level crossing settings Queensland students encounter in real life, giving the learning immediate real-world relevance.
Highly Customised Interactivity
Both active and passive level crossings are represented, each with custom interactions that respond to student choices. Students experience the consequences of safe and unsafe decisions within the game, reinforcing the behaviours Queensland Rail wants to instil.
Custom Entities and Behaviours
The world features custom-created entities — including Elliot, an in-game robot buddy — each built with custom behaviours not found in standard Minecraft. These entities drive the narrative and learning progression throughout the game.
Scaffolded, Structured Gameplay
The game is built around three progressive missions, carefully structured to scaffold student understanding. Students begin by exploring and observing, then move into testing and decision-making, before applying what they've learned to teach Elliot the correct behaviours — a pedagogical approach that reinforces learning through teaching.
Coding Integration
Students must program Elliot using a custom in-game coding activity, connecting the rail safety learning to STEM skills and giving the experience a cross-curricular dimension aligned to the Australian Curriculum.
Creative Ownership
The in-game town can be customised and built upon by students, allowing them to recreate landmarks from their own communities — deepening personal connection to the safety messaging.
Curriculum Alignment
Track Stars! is designed for Years 3-6 and is available to all Queensland teachers free of charge via the Queensland Rail website. It joins a growing suite of state-based rail safety Minecraft experiences, following similar projects EduElfie created for Transport for NSW (Level Up!) and the Victorian Department of Education.
Get the Game
Teachers can access Track Stars! and accompanying teaching resources directly from the Queensland Rail website. An active Minecraft Education account is required to play.
