Drosophila Genetics is an ambitious Minecraft: Education Edition project currently in development — and one that showcases just how far custom Minecraft experiences can push the boundaries of what's possible in science education.
The Vision
The goal is a world where students can intuitively explore and discover genetic inheritance patterns through hands-on experimentation with Drosophila (fruit flies) in Minecraft. Rather than being told how genetics works, students will breed flies and observe the outcomes — building genuine conceptual understanding through play and inquiry.
What It Will Cover
The finished world aims to support student exploration of Punnett squares, dominant and recessive inheritance, sex-linked traits, autosomal linkage, lethal alleles, and potentially incomplete dominance — covering a breadth of genetics content rarely seen in a single interactive resource.
Follow the Build
The development of this project is being documented publicly, including a tutorial video series being released progressively on EduElfie's YouTube channel — useful for any educator looking to create their own customised Minecraft: Education Edition experiences.
Updates are also posted on EduElfie's blog.
