PLATFORM — Substation is one of EduElfie's most unique commissions — a project that blurred the boundary between the digital and the physical, and demonstrated just how far Minecraft can be pushed as a creative and cultural platform.
The Project
EduElfie was commissioned to design a virtual recreation of SUBSTATION, a well-known arts venue located in Newport, Melbourne. The virtual world served as the setting for a series of five live events, where artists' 2D and 3D works and original music were incorporated into the Minecraft environment and experienced by participants either in-world or via streaming platforms.
What It Involved
Each of the five events required new content — new activities, new interactive elements, and new artist works integrated into the world. The project involved not only the core architectural recreation of the SUBSTATION building, but also the ongoing design of highly interactive and engaging in-world experiences for each event.
Given these were live, public events, particular attention was paid to the security and integrity of in-world builds — ensuring that participant activity didn't compromise the experience for others — as well as real-time monitoring during each event to keep things running smoothly.
A First of Its Kind
PLATFORM — Substation stands as a testament to what Minecraft can be when placed in the hands of creative thinkers willing to push it beyond the classroom. It remains one of our proudest and most creatively challenging projects.
